Friends of the Friendless Will Tell You of Chet (pt. 2)
Friends, tell me now, who is Chet? SRSLY.
Friends of the Friendless 2 was an epic revelation of a ride, so I split it into two posts. EPIC. Read the other one! Oh, and guess what? Friends of the Friendless #3, this Thursday, Bikerowave, 9pm!
Let’s synopsisize. Friends of the Friendless is a Cub Camp spin off. We ride around town looking for lone cyclists. When we meet one we chant “One of Us, One of US!” and ride with them to their destination. On the way tales are told, hijinks are had, and friends are made. This ride is the universal panacea for no friends disease.
The previous post left off with us at 7-11, wondering at the location of Chet. Christina, a lone rider who joined us, didn’t seem to know his location, nor did anyone else:
Friendless the Cubs turned West and headed for Santa Monica. We rolled through West LA and East Santa Monica largely friendless. Despondent, we headed to the beach to get some perspective. There the cubs rediscovered a pastime, glo writing. On a previous Cub Camp the Cubs had used the dark of a blackout to create scenes using long camera exposures and bike lights. Recently a well known Midnight Ridazz participant, “Glo Rider”, lost his battle with cancer, so maybe we can dedicate these photos to him, post photo snapping. Cubz?
RRAGH! Hanging out at the beach restored our fearsome friend finding FUNger. Energized the Cubz headed for Main St and quickly found a restaurant worker who was glad to have us, and we escorted him down the sidewalk two blocks. It was a short distance but a huge win for us friendless. We were back in the friend making game.
We headed South to Abbot Kinney, and we spotted a rider heading north behind the bars and shops. We Cubz swung into action, pulled a quick turn and swooped in on our prey . . . err, friend. As we rolled up on the rider he asked “what is this?” and laughed. We explained and he laughed, and invited us to ride back with him. The rider told us that this was the best thing that ever happened to him, and we were instant friends. I think Marcus, one of the founding Cubz, probably shed a tear of joy. As we rolled closer to his house he invited us to party at his place. Invitation ACCEPTED. Introductions were made, and that is when we learned that:
THIS IS CHET!!11!
We rolled into Chet’s house, a totally rad apartment compound with trees full of crystals and superhero action figures. Chet’s pad was a bomb ass place to party, and riders immediately made a beer run. Always making friends, we found a new friend in a young neighbor of Chet’s, who came out and kicked it with us. Photos were taken, beers drunk, friends made, and a good time was had by all, until we adjourned sometime around 2 am to return to Bikerowave.

BTW, Christina was totally awesome to join us, and that was just as phenomenal as meeting Chet. I can’t wait for more friend making on Friends of the Friendless, or new and better ways of making friend. Maybe a friends bus? Check out Steve’s photos, or my photos:

I L HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ‘POST’ ON MIDNIGHTRIDAZZ WEBSITE, LOOKING FOR SOME (GOOD AND INSIGHTFUL) KIND OF INFORMATION WITH NOTHING BUT NEGATIVE RESPONSES AND THE LIKE, I REALLY ENJOY READING YOUR JOURNAL, IT IS VERY WELL PRESENTED, KEEP IT UP, AND THANKS.
Alex,
Your posts always make me smile! Keep on riding and keep on writing!
I add you as we speak. Do I know you? I know of you. I currently house Mikey Wally.
@Enci
Of course - no stopping! I got a little sick there last week . . . but I’m all fired up again.
@Stephani
You’re of src-revolutions? I don’t think we’ve met, but if you’re housing Mikey Wally then we are kindred spirits if at the least. Tell him to wash behind his ears and never say “soda”. Thanks for the add!
Great story!
I think I actually ran into you guys that day along the bike path near Abbot Kenney. Had I not been picking up my girlfriends car (which had an hour before it got a ticket) I would’ve taken you up on the invite!
