On CICLE: bicycle advocacy, FAIL. Bike Activism, WANT!

Published by Alex Thompson at 7:54 pm under Activism

I worked pretty hard on an opinion piece for CICLE.org, and they published it today! Thanks CICLE! The piece is on the topic of bicycle advocacy in LA, and why it’s failing. I know that’s not interesting to everyone, and I’ll put together a real post for tomorrow night. Here’s a quote to help you decide if you want to read it:

Why are funded infrastructure advocates failing when social bike organizers are succeeding? Because their tactics, derived from the early days of bicycle advocacy, are outmoded.

I hope the piece will start a big controversy and we can all have a healthy discussion about methodology for cyclists getting what we need. Here’s the pic from the piece:

That’s a poster created by the Santa Monica Planning Department for a workshop this weekend. In the grand scheme of planners they, and their consultants, are pretty good. Still, sometimes they just make it too easy. Success is parking paying to make more parking?! The day that parking is available everywhere there will be a love riot in the streets! Hugs for all.
